We have just returned from a last minute dash to Lesvos for a week of birding. We were based in Anaxos (in the northern area of Lesvos) which is a quiet rural area away from any hustle and bustle, perfect! We did most of our birding on foot locally as neither of us drives so we couldnt hire a vehicle to get about. We really did cover some ground, I am suffering now with aching shoulders and back from carrying the heavy camera gear around and also my ankle is giving me grief from all the walking!
We managed a day out at the Kalloni saltpans thanks to the generosity of a local restaurant owner who gave us a lift there on her way to Mytellini, thanks Alison (and Costas!), we had a great day! We spent a few hours there and then hiked back to Kalloni town (quite a walk) before getting a taxi back to our base.
We clocked up c100 species in all which was pretty good including a lot of "lifers", we will certainly go back there sometime in the future.
The weather wasnt too favourable, a lot of cloudy days and rain although we did have a couple of days when the sun shone for us.
We have 10 days to recover now before heading off on another birding trip to Portugal :)
